Less than 2 months to the 6th running of the River, Roots & Ruts Trail Run! Southwest Florida has survived another hurricane season and the trails at the park are in fine shape waiting for your return. The "course you love to hate" will be even better and more challenging this year. We will measure the newest trail section this week and will have the finalized course published on our website shortly thereafter.

If you want to check out the trails, join us for our now traditional "Trial Trail Run" on Sunday December 14th. We’ll meet at the campground entrance of the Caloosahatchee Regional Park at 10 am. We typically run for about an hour to hour and a half, 10 miles tops, and shorter routes are available. It's a nice way to familiarize yourself with the trails and enjoy a rice run in the park. Let me know if you'll be joining us so we don't leave without you.

Green HogHave you noticed that green is in?  Seems like all the running magazines have cover stories on green races and green running lately.  While we were mentioned in both Runner's World and Trail Runner we don't consider ourselves trendy. We strive to do it right because it is a good thing to do and our runners encourage us to continue our efforts. Our green policies have earned us a membership in Runners World GreenTeam Races.

On a suggestion from one of our runners we have teamed up with PickupPal. It's a way to carpool (find a ride, give a ride) to and/or from the race. No fees, save gas, maybe even make a new running friend or two.

This year all half marathoners will receive a long sleeve organic cotton t-shirt printed with our custom design in natural dye.  Fun Runners will get an organic cotton bandanna printed with the same natural ink. All half marathon finishers will receive a custom medal made from recycled glass hung on a lanyard made from recycled race blankets.

Big news this year: no one will win a root!  That's right, no roots for you.  We were never sure where the "roots" actually came from so this year's winners will receive a new custom award made from black locust, an invasive tree that is a bane to foresters here in NJ where I now live. It's a beautiful wood and I guarantee that this award will be unique on your trophy shelve.

** This year we will be banning headphones and cell phones for the half marathon. ** We’ve received complaints that runners either can't hear to yield, or simply won’t (an unforgivable breach of trail running etiquette) on the narrow trails.  You use 'em, you get no award if you place, and... we won't smile when you finish!  So, get the plugs out of your ears -- you even enjoy running through park listening to the sounds of the natural world (and your competitors).

Of course, more details will follow.  If you have a business or organization that would like to participate as a sponsor or volunteer please let me know.  Proceeds are donated to the participating volunteer organizations to support their educational programs and to park trail maintenance.

More to come....

Happy Trails!
