The Hog Days of Summer
When it rains in SW Florida it really rains! The wet season has arrived, close to on schedule. After a thunderstorm rolls through and dumps many inches of rain the north side trails can be impassable for days afterward. New this year - the county will be closing the north side of the park when it is too wet. If you are planning to run the trails this summer it would be a good idea to check with the park office (239-694-0398) to find out if the they are open.
The course should be the same as last year, unless mother nature or the Mudcutters get creative. Be sure to tell your friends that haven't run the RRR about the trails. With barely 10' of elevation change, how tough can they be? Let them find out for themselves!
NEW! River, Roots and Ruts Profile - We have seen a lot of familiar faces returning year after year giving this event an almost family atmosphere, one rather large family mind you. In this "family" we have runners of varying abilities, from first time trail runners to experienced ultra marathoners. While it might be hard to believe, some runners do something other than train for and run the RRR. So we can get to know who is running the trails with us, or possibly way ahead of us, we will profile a runner in this and upcoming Trail Mails. Our first profilee:
Christy Burns McLaughlin must have logged the most miles if not in training for the RRR then surely in traveling as she flies in each year from Colorado. She has run every RRR but the inaugural race in 2004 and remarkably she has won her age group every time! When not traveling to Fort Myers and running the RRR she has found the time to run 15 marathons, including 6 Bostons with a PR of 3:19, a few 50K and 50 mile ultramarathons and is now training for one of toughest ultras anywhere, the Leadville 100. Christy is a real trail running mother, having given birth to Connor last year. We expect we will be seeing Connor joining his mom on the trails soon and bringing home some shiny metal objects.
Who will we profile next?
Registration is open and the fees will still be a bargain even when the rates go up on December 1st. This month's Runners World (August) states that 2/3's of half marathons charge more than $50, some up to $100! You're probably aware that a lot of races, including the RRR, have been reaching capacity and not all that want to run get to run. So don't wait until the last minute or you might find yourself reading about the results instead of being listed in them. The half marathon will be limited to 350 runners. There is no limit on the Fun Run.

Sponsors - We couldn't put on an event like this without the generous support of our sponsors. In addition to our gratitude our sponsors get year round exposure on our website, the opportunity to participate at the event, and their business will be associtated with this very popular trail running event, and a "green" one at that. Visit our Sponsorship page for more details.
Our volunteers have a great time at this event. If you have a business or organization that would like to join us as a sponsor or volunteer please let me know. Proceeds are donated to the participating volunteer organizations to support their educational programs and to park trail maintenance. In addition to providing a quality race for the participants we have been able to donate over $8,000 to the organizations that help us put on this event. |
